Why do you need this course?
External timber structures are very different to roof trusses. Trusses are designed primarily for strength. Being protected from the weather by a roof durable species are not required and natural feature does not deteriorate further. Fasteners in a roof generally are not subject to corrosion.
The design considerations for a boardwalk, on the other hand, should all be about durability. Sadly, too often we see conventional construction practices and specifications used and the results can be very disappointing.
Learn from a specialist
After years of manufacturing award-winning and durable hardwood, in 1997 I received a grant to do research into boardwalk design. This was undertaken for us by Australia's leading specialist timber engineer.
Since then, further research followed along with some very impressive projects. I have had years to observe what causes issues and how to avoid them. I love nothing more than passing on a lifetime's experience.
Foundation basics
You will learn how to design your abutments to ensure a very long life is achieved. Factors include good airflow, correct material choice and correct embedment practices.
Designing for safety
You will learn how poor derailing and construction can result in safety issues. These screws were installed in a straight line instead of being staggered, they work out and become trip hazards.
Designing handrail well
For all the effort that you must put into the subframe and deck, all the aesthetics are in the handrail. I will teach you the key points to design a handrail that ages gracefully.
Example Curriculum
Tap into my vast experience
Many years of specialising in market leading external structures such as bridges decks, boardwalks, and landscaping set me apart from my competitors. I am now teaching what I learnt over a lifetime.
