All timber applications are not equal
There is a world of difference between timber used in a roof truss and that used in handrail. The former never sees any weather or a critical eye and just has to perform structurally. Handrail timber must be able to withstand the ravages of a harsh Australian climate and be of an appropriate apperance grade.
You will learn why it is important to have specialised specifications for products suxh as handrails and not specify and order them as you would roof truss material.
Why you need this course
Your presenter, Edgar (Ted) Stubbersfield was a sawmiller and timber processor for many years. He specialised in high quality, high performance decking and handrail. He has also written the guide, Grading Hardwood.
Edgar understands the limitation of AS2082 and will teach you where it can be trusted and where you have to specify over and above its requirements. You also will ce able to deliver the same outcomes for your clients.
Durability and AS2082
The abobe timber from Northern Queensland is only 4.5 years old. Durability is not mentiones at all in timber that is just specified by an F grade
Grading is not subjective
A strength of AS2082 is that it is not subjective. A grader can measure any natural feature and give the piece a pass or fail against the nominated grade.
Natural feature is limited
Just because a piece if timber has the right dimensions and is from the nominated species. it may still be unsuitable for use. There is a limit to the amount of natural feature that is permitetd in the different grades. You will learn what acceptable timber looks like.
Example Curriculum
You will learn the importance of independent inspections
Timber quality varies from supplier to supplier. Without a national quality program in place you will learn the importance of having independent confirmation of grade. This image shows me grading ironbark that has not had the sapwood treated which made it unfit for purpose.
