Why You need the Course

The image to the left of 200x100 bollards prior to treating shows how little timber treatment is understood. Only the small portions in red will take any chemical, the remainder will be completely unaffected by the the process. If that portion decayed it is insufficient to affect their structural integrity. Natural durability is your first consideration, not whether the red portions are treated to H3, H4 or H5..

What you will learn

you will learn what timber preservation will and will not do. It will not compensate for a poor timber specification when it comes to natural durability and the quality of the timber itself. Neither will it compensate for using poor construction practices. Instead, it is part, and an important part of the solution to timber durability.

You will learn the very important difference between preservation and sapwood stabilisation which is generally all you can achieve with sawn timber.

Your instructor

Timber preservation was part of the family business Gatton Sawmilling Company from, 1966. After joining the business in 1975 he became an expert in the field of Timber Preservation. His career has been marked by a profound commitment to understanding the complexities of wood treatment and pioneering the commercialisation of new and less toxic preservatives to Australia,

He is interested in the practical applications of preservation in various construction and architectural projects. Ted's extensive background encompasses both hands-on work in timber preservation, as well as academic research, making him a well-rounded authority on the subject matter.

As an educator, Ted's passion is evident through his dedication to sharing his knowledge with the next generation of professionals in the Timber Preservation course. His teaching style is deeply rooted in real-world experiences, ensuring that students not only learn the theoretical aspects of wood preservation but also understand how to apply these principles in practical scenarios.

Comprehensive

A Deep Dive into Sustainable Timber Preservation Techniques particularly in relation to weather exposed applications

Informative

You will learn to recognise timber that is actually preserved and timber that is simply coloured. You will know why sapwood must be stabelised.

Practical

You will learn when treatment requirements go beyond the minimum requirements of Australian Standards.
